Description
A simple and effective method to create your own sourdough starter from scratch using just flour and water.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup All-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup Water (room temperature)
Instructions
- In a clean glass jar, combine 1 cup of all-purpose flour and 1/2 cup of room temperature water. Stir until there are no dry bits of flour.
- Cover the jar loosely with a lid or a clean cloth, allowing air to flow in while keeping dust out.
- Let the mixture sit at room temperature for 24 hours.
- On day 2, you may see some bubbles. Discard half of the starter (about 3/4 cup), and add another 1 cup of flour and 1/2 cup of water. Mix well and cover loosely again.
- Repeat this process of discarding half and feeding with flour and water every 24 hours for the next 5-7 days.
- Your starter is ready when it has doubled in size, is bubbly, and has a pleasant sour smell.
- To maintain your starter, continue to feed it every week if stored in the fridge, or every day if kept at room temperature.
Notes
- Use filtered or bottled water if your tap water is heavily chlorinated.
- If your starter develops a layer of liquid on top, this is called ‘hooch’ and can be stirred back in or discarded before feeding.
