Description

This crispy fried chicken recipe will give you juicy, flavorful chicken with a perfectly crunchy coating. Perfect for any occasion!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 whole chicken, cut into pieces
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the buttermilk, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
  2. Add the chicken pieces to the buttermilk mixture, ensuring they are fully submerged. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight for best results.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix the flour with a pinch of salt and pepper.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or deep fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Remove chicken from the buttermilk and let any excess drip off. Dredge each piece in the flour mixture, pressing lightly to adhere.
  6. Fry the chicken in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Cook for about 15-20 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and cooked through (internal temperature should reach 165°F/74°C).
  7. Remove the chicken from the oil and drain on paper towels. Allow to rest for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For extra crunch, double dip the chicken by returning it to the buttermilk and then to the flour again before frying.
  • You can also add your favorite herbs and spices to the flour mixture for additional flavor.
  • Serve with your favorite sides such as coleslaw, biscuits, or mashed potatoes.
