Description
A delightful homemade fig preserves recipe that captures the sweet and rich flavor of figs, perfect for spreading on toast or adding to desserts.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups fresh figs, stemmed and quartered
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- In a large pot, combine the quartered figs, sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon (if using), and salt.
- Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, then reduce to a simmer.
- Cook for about 30-45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the figs have broken down and the mixture thickens.
- To test for doneness, place a spoonful of the preserves on a plate and let it cool slightly. Run your finger through it; if it holds its shape, it’s ready.
- Once thickened, remove from heat and let cool for a few minutes.
- Pour the preserves into sterilized jars and seal them while still warm.
- Let the jars cool to room temperature before storing them in the refrigerator.
Notes
- Feel free to adjust the sugar based on the sweetness of your figs.
- For a chunkier texture, reserve some figs to add back in after the cooking process.
- These preserves can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 months.
