This crispy chicken air fryer recipe results in juicy, tender chicken with a perfectly crispy coating, all made with less oil than traditional frying.


Ingredients

  • 4 chicken thighs, bone-in and skin-on
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Cooking spray or olive oil spray

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, soak the chicken thighs in buttermilk for at least 1 hour, or overnight for best results.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix together flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper.
  3. Remove chicken from buttermilk and let excess drip off. Dredge each piece in the seasoned flour mixture, making sure to coat well.
  4. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C).
  5. Spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Place the coated chicken thighs in the basket in a single layer, skin side up.
  6. Spray the tops of the chicken with cooking spray.
  7. Air fry for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the chicken is golden brown and crispy, and the internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C).
  8. Let the chicken rest for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For extra crispy skin, you can double dredge the chicken by dipping it back in buttermilk and then in the flour mixture again.
  • Feel free to add your favorite spices to the flour mixture for additional flavor.
  • Serve with your choice of dipping sauces or sides.
