Description

A comforting classic homemade lasagna with layers of pasta, rich meat sauce, and melty cheese.


Ingredients

  • 12 lasagna noodles
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 lb Italian sausage
  • 1 onion (chopped)
  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 28 oz crushed tomatoes
  • 6 oz tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp fennel seeds
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 15 oz ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cook lasagna noodles according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.
  3. Brown ground beef and sausage in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and garlic, cook until softened.
  4. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, water, sugar, basil, fennel seeds, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 30 minutes.
  5. In a bowl, mix ricotta cheese with egg.
  6. Layer ingredients in a 9×13-inch baking dish: 1/3 meat sauce, 6 noodles, 1/2 ricotta mixture, 1 cup mozzarella, 1/4 cup Parmesan. Repeat layers.
  7. Top with remaining sauce, mozzarella, and Parmesan.
  8. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 25 minutes.
  9. Let rest for 15 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Let lasagna sit before cutting to help it hold shape.
  • You can substitute ground turkey for a lighter version.
  • For extra flavor, add a layer of spinach or mushrooms.
