Description

This hearty Amish breakfast casserole is perfect for feeding a crowd. It’s loaded with eggs, cheese, sausage, and bread, making it a filling and delicious start to your day.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound breakfast sausage, crumbled
  • 8 slices of bread, cubed
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup milk
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 cup chopped green onions (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, cook the crumbled sausage until browned and cooked through. Drain excess fat.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  4. In a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, layer the bread cubes, cooked sausage, and shredded cheese.
  5. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread and sausage. Gently press down with a spatula to ensure the bread absorbs the egg mixture.
  6. If using, sprinkle chopped green onions on top.
  7. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  8. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the casserole is set and the top is golden brown.
  9. Let cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • You can prepare this casserole the night before and refrigerate it. Just add an extra 10-15 minutes to the baking time if baking straight from the fridge.
